Our dear sister Amber was a huge part of the inception of our company. She was original, filled with spirit, and never let us forget who we are or where we come from. She had a connection to this culture far more advanced than any of us could comprehend. When she danced her expression invoked the spirit of our ancestors. When she drummed she communicated messages of our people. She was a luminous presence in our community and stood firmly in her purpose with every breath she took. It was our honor and pleasure to share time and space with Amber while she was with us, and we will continue to uplift her name as we follow on the path she helped lay out for us.
Being someone who was wholly committed to always living in her highest self, we will never forget the day she felt frustration, sat us all down and one by one, asked us what our reason was for practicing this art. She looked us all in the eye, demanding that we voice our mission. At the time we could not fathom how crucial this moment would be for our company's and community's future growth. The boldness with which she called us out, and charged us to practice these crafts with all out integrity still informs the decisions we make to this day. Amber was a real one, a soldier, a teacher, a student, an old soul, a wonderful daughter, sister, aunt and the most warm and loving friend.
In February 2019 Amber transitioned to the ancestral realm and became our guardian angel. She is now eternally dancing by our side, singing through us and drumming along as we continue this journey she started with us. We know that she is uplifting us in our music and movement just as we will always elevate her name and spirit with every beat. Nobody was down for the culture like Amber was. She will always be an irreplaceable piece of our puzzle.
"I am African.
When I dance I pay homage to Almighty God.
When I dance I pay homage to the Earth.
When I dance I make my Ancestors and Elders smile because through me, this ancient tradition will continue to build the present and shape the future.
When I dance, the children will sing, laugh, and be filled with love, peace, and happiness.
When I dance, the drums sing their ancient language."
